Often minimized as a model or muse — Lee Miller was one of the most important, singular, photographers of World War II. Unfortunately, the photo most often associated with Miller is of her, not by her.
Watched this movie a couple days ago! Those scenes with exhausted dead bodies made me cry so much especially understanding that all that was real! Truly great photographer!
We stayed in the Grand Hotel in Sopot (a beach resort near Gdansk) years ago which macabrely retains the suite (completely untouched apart from cleaning) which Hitler used. A very strange experience indeed to visit it
It's hard to "like" this, but your restrained reportage and notation of the photographs is so enlightening, Patrick. As a lifelong history nut I am grateful to learn about Lee Miller. I have never run across her work before. I have visited Dachau, or at least what is left of it. Very sobering. Thank you.
I researched for a paper a friend, who was writing about Man Ray’s photography. In the process, I discovered Lee Miller’s work, and became fascinated by it. Thank you for this!
Wow, I can see why she begged to be believed, because it's all so beyond the periphery of "normal" - all of it, damn
Thank you for restacking this article. Lee Miller was perhaps one of the most important photographers of the era.
Powerful read
Thanks so much! I’m curious, how did you find my piece? Was it recommended or shared somewhere?
I think that it just appeared in my normal( whatever this means😄) feed.
TY for posting it

What a great post! I hadn't seen some of these pictures before.
I did a project with the Lee Miller Archives once - got to sit in Lee's old bedroom and go through her unpublished negatives.
Lucky you!

I worked at Holt when her book was published. I have a perfect first edition of the book. A total pleasure!
That was a very good movie.

Hamas and other idiot jihadist supporters, I hope you view the pics in this post and have nightmares like never before!
Our grandparents were so amazing weren’t they? The things they did and saw unbelievable.
I look at people now and think what a dim version of the past our world is, makes me wonder what happened. It brings awe and just a tinge of shame.
Excellent
Lee Miller was an amazing trailblazer!

Very interesting
Macabre, horrendous and riveting at the same time.
A gorgeous story, very well done. Thank you what a great read. I have great appreciation of Lee Miller, she was uniquely qualified.
