A detail of Vucci’s photo that I haven’t seen mentioned is that the flag has the vague appearance of flying upside down, adding another layer of symbolism. I understand it is actually being flown sideways, but the angle of the one visible supporting pole and the flag’s distance from it almost make it look as if it is falling upside down from it.

Look at the angle of the flag in David Butow's photo in this...https://patrickwitty.substack.com/p/the-flag-is-a-force-that-gives-us

Yes, that one is clearly being flown upside down. And is being weaponized.

What a fabulously thorough account from the POV of the people responsible for establishing The POV. As a photographer, this is really really fascinating thanks for putting it all together and highlighting all the different image makers.

Thank you for this thorough account of this latest political violence - the scale of the recording is amazing. The immediate use of Vicci’s shot for political purposes is breathtaking.

Note: your previous post talked a lot about the use of a flag in photos - and we see the Stars and Stripes ominously over T’s head - and from Vucci’s angle, it is also upside down. The significance of this photo will be felt for a long time.

Great article as always. The closing Trump quote is ridiculously appropriate. And I think my favorite cover out of all of them is Liberation's.

One may also be struck by how quickly the event, and that image, has faded from public consciousness. Trump is no more or less popular than he was before, and the world has comfortably moved on from something that seemed earth-shaking when it happened.
