I was a kid when the mountain blew, and I was so sad about all those cats. I would love your scenario - Lasher, Truman, AND Truman’s cats! 🐈 🐈‍⬛ 🐱

Later history has made an icon of independent Truman, but, gosh, at the time, in local w. Washington news, it seemed like you couldn’t read about Truman without the cats. It definitely added sentiment to the story!

This pic and the one of David Johnston at his camp site are iconic. For anyone reading this, I highly recommend a trip to the Johnston Ridge observatory. The view is awesome (in the biblical sense) and humbling.

Hey Kevin, totally agree. That photo of David was taken by fellow volcanologist Harry Glicken, who tragically died 11 years later at Mount Unzen in Japan. Great idea for a piece next year - appreciate the comment!
